In 1st grade we practice the three ways there are to read a book...
Students use the IPICK strategy to find Good-Fit Books to read during our literacy time. When students have a variety of books that are a good-fit for them, they are more likely to be engaged during independent reading time. Instead of spending time looking for a book to read, students are equipped with a bag of up to 8 good-fit books. Research states that a good-fit book is one that the student can read with 99% accuracy
What is I Pick? I PICK is the strategy we teach children when choosing good-fit books.
I choose a book and look it over, inside and out.
Purpose: Why might I want to read it?
Interest: Does it interest me?
Comprehend: Do I understand what I am reading?
Know: Do I know most of the words?
